SCHATTEN (Eurydike sagt) [SHADOW (Eurydice says)], the great monologue of the dead Eurydice from the underworld, was Matthias Hartmann’s first Jelinek production at Vienna’s Akademietheater in 2013 – featuring Nikolaus Habjan’s Jelinek puppet, for, as the Nachtkritik noted, in this text «the poet reveals quite a lot about herself». Marianne Schroeder, as a pianist with a faible for improvisation, worked alongside John Cage and Giacinto Scelsi (also at Wien Modern in 2005). She forges a link between Jelinek’s powerful theatrical text and the longing for two lovers – Gottfried Hüngsberg and Jürg Laederach, who, in a reversal of the myth, are brought back from Hades with Eurydice. The leading role of the evening is played – in absence, yet all the more present – by Elfriede Jelinek’s personal time machine: the Steinway grand piano of her youth (03.11. 18:30), which, in a most astonishing way, brings to life the decades that have passed since Jelinek’s transition from music to literature.
