Awareness at Wien Modern

Wien Modern is in an ongoing process of engagement with social diversity. As a publicly funded cultural festival, we carry a responsibility to create spaces in which different perspectives become visible, and which are accessible to as many people as possible. Since its foundation in 1988, it has been part of Wien Modern's self-understanding to explicitly include positions that have not been heard enough yet.

Awareness, for Wien Modern, means developing an understanding of how discrimination, marginalisation and institutional barriers lead to people, or groups of people, being excluded. This includes self-critically questioning our position and role in society and recognising where power structures become effective as forms of violence.

The steps we are taking in 2025 include creating a new position for diversity development in the team and working on a structured and transparent awareness process. We are also collecting equality and anti-discrimination data from artists in our programme for the first time.

The process is being supported by AwA*, Ivana Pilić | D-Arts and Persson Perry Baumgartinger | TransComm Büro für transformative Kommunikation.

New point of contact

Wien Modern should be as accessible, safe and inclusive as possible. We have set up a point of contact for feedback, concerns, and for reports of incidents of assault and discrimination: awareness@wienmodern.at.

This inbox is managed by two people from the Wien Modern team. They bring with them knowledge and experience of discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation and class. They are in an ongoing process of education on discrimination based on origin, race, language, religion, age, disability and neurodiversity.

The processing of enquiries is adapted towards the needs of those affected, after confidential consultation. Enquiries are usually answered within 48 hours; however, delays can occasionally occur during festival operations.

Some requests exceed the capabilities of our team. That is why we list additional resources for professional offers of support here.
