In exciting company to her new orchestral work and her work as an improvisational musician, Angélica Castelló, born in Mexico and a native of Vienna, presents her major music theatre premiere Red Rooms at Wien Modern. On stage are three cages and a family trapped in their own patterns – mother, son and granddaughter. They listen to the radio, talk, sing, drink, eat, sleep, kiss, fuck, puke, shit ... The radio broadcasts interviews, news and commercials from Radio Roja, audible in German, English, French, Spanish. On stage, on the other hand, voices and other sound generators produce a wild mixture of artificial language, onomatopoeia, noises, literary and diary quotations. The music, too, speaks the language of Angélica Castelló: dreamlike slowness and anti-virtuosity, minimalism and strange friction, the fearless misappropriation of old music (Gibbons, Ockeghem, Monteverdi), pop music and other objets trouvés. Quiet passages meet walls of noise, rock, drones, sine waves and low frequencies. And while the radio switches on again and again, the Revox tape machine forms a kind of bowels through which everything passes, the intestines which eat and transform all incoming raw materials. Speaking of eating: Somewhere in the forest, deep in the unconscious of the Red Rooms, live the grandmother, Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf, and they do so in various incarnations.
