Annea Lockwood was born in New Zealand in 1939. Since 1973, she has lived in Upstate New York, 90 minutes upstream from New York City along the Hudson River. Her deep connection to all things water is evident throughout her entire body of work. In her installations, performances and compositions, she frequently combines sounds from the surrounding environment with life stories. This began in the 1970s and 1980s with pioneering works such as World Rhythms and A Sound Map of the Hudson River. This sonic portrait of a river is one of the major artistic forms to which she returns again and again.
Work on A Sound Map of the Danube began in 2001 in Donaueschingen and led her, across 2850 km, over four years and in around 80 stages, to the Black Sea. From the roaring of a dam to the tadpoles in the Danube's wetlands, from the sizzling water at the bow of a ferry to the astonishing stories people tell by the river, there is much to discover in this installation. While condensed to a very short duration, the work radiates a wonderful sense of tranquillity: Ada Kaleh, the sunken outpost of the Ottoman Empire at the Iron Gate; memories of war in Novi Sad; people reading newspapers while swimming; and much, much more. In collaboration with the MAK and Wien Modern, Annea Lockwood presents A Sound Map of the Danube in Vienna for the first time – it's a special invitation to engage with nature and its vibrant, complex soundscapes through attentive listening. As part of Wien Modern, visitors can also experience her work Piano Garden (1969–1970) as well as her complete piano works.
