With Keintate, around 1980, Friedrich Cerha (1926–2023) discovered the Wienerlied [Viennese song] and Viennese dialect for his music. These miniatures, which are almost suitable for a Heuriger [wine tavern] and will be performed at Wien Modern by a star-studded line-up, form a surprising counterpoint to the avant-garde of Spiegel (30.11. 19:30).
‘For a long time, I made a point of seeing myself as a citizen of the world, and I also believed that I was making music in accordance with this. It actually took me a long time to realise that this wasn’t true and that there are roots here that I didn’t see – or, if I didn’t see them, perhaps I didn’t want to acknowledge them, like many of my generation, by the way. It was always one of my principles to look at things under a microscope […] and not to let them run unchecked. In this way, I have, so to speak, also come back to my own past.” (Friedrich Cerha)
