Founded in 1901 to break free from the dependence on German sheet music imports, Universal Edition helped shape the development of contemporary music from its base in Vienna. Thanks to prominent figures such as Emil Hertzka and Alfred Schlee, the publisher succeeded in including Gustav Mahler, Arnold Schönberg, Alban Berg, Anton von Webern, Béla Bartók, Josef Matthias Hauer and Ernst Krenek in its catalogue, as well as, after the Second World War, Luciano Berio, Pierre Boulez, Beat Furrer, Arvo Pärt, Wolfgang Rihm and many others. However, for its anniversary, UE is not celebrating with its legendary back catalogue, but with world premieres and first performances from the most recent chapter in the publisher’s history.
