There is a space within Elfriede Jelinek’s ever-expanding body of work that is actually freely available on the internet, yet still far too little known and rarely engaged with. It is to serve as a source of inspiration for three evenings under the title «Besser Wird’s Nicht» [It won’t get better than this]: Since 1996, the poet has been publishing prose and essays on her website, elfriedejelinek.com – on music, theatre, literature, film, politics, society and Austria – which often circulate only amongst insiders. «We must go to her; she will not come to us», wrote the critic Jörg Sundermeier, for example. In the first programme of the series, Petra Slottová and Samouil Stoyanov confront Jelinek’s texts with a rapid succession of older and newer polemics, award speeches and excerpts from plays, which liberate a dialectical tension between deep banter and highly philosophical, literary aspirations, between puppet theater and a refusal of theatrics, sometimes in very funny ways.
