Mark Andre’s work centres on «music of disappearance». This phrase takes on a dual meaning in the full-length composition … selig ist … [… blessed is …]. On the one hand, working with the SWR Experimentalstudio in Freiburg, Mark Andre has paid particular acoustic attention to those moments of piano sound where sound borders on silence – the decay of the swinging of strings and the reverberation, or inversely, the initial resonance when a key is struck. On the other hand, the composition of this piece was sparked by the death of a child in a family of musician friends; as a result, Mark Andre, together with the studio’s sound engineers, also incorporated recordings of places from the child’s life – from his private surroundings, the Freiburg Cathedral Boys’ Choir and the River Dreisam, but also from Berlin’s Charité hospital and the Tränenpalast. These become «de-concreticised» traces of transience – and ultimately, points of reference for remembrance and comfort for the living: «Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted» (Matthew 5:4).
