Driven by a shared desire to explore complex ecological interrelationships through art and to make them emotionally accessible through music, Flora Geißelbrecht, Anna Koch, Ralph Mothwurf, David Six and Simon Zöchbauer founded the Ensemble SOIL. Since 2024, the ensemble has been dedicated to the theme of soil and the biosphere in general. A central impulse for this thematic focus emerged from discussions with the biologist Suzanne Kapelari from the University of Innsbruck, which opened up new perspectives on the connection between scientific research and artistic practice. Since then, the musicians have been working intensively on the conceptual and practical realisation of the project of the same name, SOIL. Starting from the soil as a complex, living system, they translate ecological interrelationships, scientific findings and questions concerning the relationship between humans and nature into contemporary music, performative and intermedial formats.
