Every tuning is a kind of tension. In music, tuning and tension don’t lie in the sounds themselves, but in-between; in the movement from one sound to another. With instrumental music, the tension between the sounds of oboes, violins, violas, percussion, the human voice, a piano etc. – all of this sounds and swings to, from, with and together. Whether it is scores or improvisation – the source is not just audible, but also visible. Acousmatic music is a music of saved sounds and thus a virtual kind of music. How does tension arise where sounds cannot be attributed to specific sources? What is it that sounds and rings together? What makes a tune and which compositional rules are law here?
