With its praxis of "Instant Composition Conducting", the Vienna Improvisers Orchestra is the first large ensemble in Austria to take up a discourse on non-written sound organisation that goes back to Bruno Maderna, John Zorn and Frank Zappa, among others, and which was continued by Lawrence D. Butch Morris under the name "Conduction". Based on Morris's method, Michael Fischer founded the Vienna Improvisers Orchestra in 2004, in which around 300 musicians have participated since.
