The Arditti Quartet is the only ensemble that stood on stage at every single edition of Wien Modern – with one notable exception: the world's biggest project to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the legendary London String Quartet in 2024 had to be postponed at short notice due to injury. Almost exactly one year later, the great adventure is happening exactly as planned: four evenings in the Mozart Hall and the Brahms Hall combine the four quartets by Arnold Schönberg with four major new commissions by Stefan Prins, Sarah Nemtsov, Chaya Czernowin and Hilda Paredes. Selected gems from collaborations with Iannis Xenakis, Salvatore Sciarrino, Luigi Nono and Clara Iannotta as well as an extra challenge by Peter Ablinger.
Schönberg's Second String Quartet – written during the private crisis that Manos Tsangaris maps out in Arnold Elevators – is definitely one of the magical moments in music history, with its Stefan George line «Ich fühle luft von anderem planeten» ["I feel air from another planet"]. On this fourth and final evening with the Arditti Quartet, the "best of" for its 50th anniversary includes Luigi Nono's famous late work Fragmente – Stille. An Diotima, which – a little anecdote from the 37 years that Wien Modern and the Arditti Quartet have been together – was cancelled in 2013 in all too close proximity to Herbert Grönemeyer. The commissioned premiere of the evening is by the Mexican composer Hilda Paredes (full disclaimer: married to Irvine Arditti). "Writing a string quartet for the Ardittis has always been a great challenge for me, as I know the skills and the extraordinary musical friendship of the ensemble so well, as well as each of its members. So whenever I write for these musicians, I set my standards extra high, and each piece has always been a journey of discovery and possibility." (Hilda Paredes).
Tickets for the respective concerts in November 2024 as well as the Festival Pass 2024 will also be valid for the new date and do not need to be exchanged. (Please note the earlier start times.)
