ARDITTI 51.2

Program

Cast

The Arditti Quartet is the only ensemble that stood on stage at every single edition of Wien Modern –  with one notable exception: the world's biggest project to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the legendary London String Quartet in 2024 had to be postponed at short notice due to injury. Almost exactly one year later, the great adventure is happening exactly as planned: four evenings in the Mozart Hall and the Brahms Hall combine the four quartets by Arnold Schönberg with four major new commissions by Stefan Prins, Sarah Nemtsov, Chaya Czernowin and Hilda Paredes. Selected gems from collaborations with Iannis Xenakis, Salvatore Sciarrino, Luigi Nono and Clara Iannotta as well as an extra challenge by Peter Ablinger.

In addition to the Austrian premiere of the major commission of Sarah Nemtsov, Schönberg's last string quartet, which contemporary critics of the 1930s found surprisingly beautiful, and the cycle by Arditti’s long-time companion Salvatore Sciarrino, which is also not short on beauty, this evening offers an extra challenge from Peter Ablinger: For the Donaueschingen "Quardittiade" in 2010, which brought together the Arditti Quartet, the JACK Quartet and Quatuor Diotima to compare interpretations, Ablinger composed a concept piece that allows the audience to become witnesses to an internal sight-reading rehearsal. How does a string quartet work together to play a technically and philosophically challenging piece whose sheet music they have only just received? At Wien Modern 2025, the Arditti Quartet will play this special work for the first time – also as a tribute to the Austrian composer, who died unexpectedly in April 2025.

Audience and Privacy
When entering the stage and before leaving it, bow to the audience as usual. But between that try to ignore the presence of an audience and stay private. Behave as if you 4 were alone and rehearsing or having a first lecture of a piece. Everything should be completely natural. Without any kind of acting or theatre. Don’t try to make it interesting for the audience. When you talk to each other, don’t try to be understandable for the audience. (Peter Ablinger)

Tickets for the respective concerts in November 2024 as well as the Festival Pass 2024 will also be valid for the new date and do not need to be exchanged. (Please note the earlier start times.)
