We strike the bells softly and so subtly break the habit of how a peal should sound. We softly pack the clappers of the bells. No longer does iron meet alloy. A soft clapper elicits different music from the bell than a hard one. Hardly any impact, much decay. A soft hum, a foreign singsong, lontano, con sordino. A music of ancient matter-of-factness. The natural melody. From the depth of space, from the depth of time it seems to come, from there it seems to tell us: the quiet ringing. (Peter Conradin Zumthor)
