Songs and Voices by Francesca Verunelli (photo) is one of the great musical achievements of recent years. The multi-layered and forceful cycle consists of six works with varying instrumentations. These range from a farewell song to the composer's young late sister, to The Silence of the Sirens – Odysseus, as told by Kafka, hears seductive singing where there is silence; he "did not hear their silence; he thought they were singing and that he alone did not hear them" (Franz Kafka).
"This presence of song in the absence of a sung voice was the driving force behind my instrumental sound research, a kind of aporia that – like Kafka's paradox – aimed to push back the limits of the instrumental 'visible'." (Francesca Verunelli)
The second great work on this extraordinary evening in the Golden Hall, Chaya Czernowin's Immaterial, an imaginary "underwater theatre", asks the question of "what happens when the voice is a sound, or the essence of an emotion, or a colour, a movement, a line" (Chaya Czernowin).
