“There’s a moment where you want to pass the voice on to the next generation,” says the artist Francis Alÿs. In 1999, playing children from many countries around the world started becoming the main subjects of his brilliant short films. A bottle is patiently transported up a mountain in Mexico City, a car tyre goes on a wild downhill ride in the Democratic Republic of Congo. A singing mosquito hunt in a malaria region, a skipping game in Hong Kong in the middle of the pandemic, flying kites in Afghanistan, a make-believe passport control in Ukraine - children play everywhere, even under the hardest conditions. The Norwegian Cikada Ensemble has invited four composers from Vienna, Norway, Belgium and Poland for a concert. inspired by the videos. In addition to the concert, Festival Wien Modern and the MAK will be showing the films of Francis Alÿs for a few days.
