CLAUDIO ABBADO KONZERT | FRIEDRICH CERHA IN MEMORIAM | PETER ZUMTHOR 2

With his movingly atmospheric buildings such as the Therme Vals, the Kolumba Art Museum in Cologne, the Kunsthaus Bregenz and the Feldkapelle Bruder Klaus, Peter Zumthor, who was born in Basel in 1943, occupies a unique position in architecture. Atmosphere is also the key to his love of music, which he calls the "greatest of the Arts." In close collaboration between Zumthor, the Vienna Musikverein and Festival Wien Modern, a week of 13 concerts and eight workshop discussions at lovingly selected venues in and around Vienna has been created to celebrate his 80th birthday. We are pleased to invite you to very personal encounters with the Pritzker Prize winner and passionate music lover Peter Zumthor.

It was a wish of Friedrich Cerha to hear his revolutionary early work Fasce once again at Wien Modern; now this performance will be a memorial concert for the composer who died on February 14, 2023. In 1959, even before Spiegel, Cerha composed this "piece of such instrumentation and difficulty" that it took 16 years for it to premiere.

The second, no less monumental piece of this year's Claudio Abbado Concert in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein is by the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize winner Rebecca Saunders: with Wound from 2022, she composed what amounts to a concerto grosso, the 'solo part' of which is taken on for the first time by Klangforum Wien as dialogue partner of the RSO Vienna. Speaking of dialogue: This evening begins with a conversation between Rebecca Saunders and Peter Zumthor, ringing in the extraordinary encounter with the visionary Swiss architect, who has given one week of the Wien Modern festival program his personal signature.
