For one weekend, Wien Modern sheds a light on the diverse scene of experimental instrument making in Vienna: for exactly ten hours, around 20 artists in ten different places will open up their workshops for the festival audience. Equipped with our specially made city map, you will find your way to extraordinary instruments and their makers at the Brunnenmarkt, on both sides of the Hernalser Gürtel, in the Federal Sculptors’ Studios in the Prater, in the Arsenal, in the Expositur of the Angewandte and in more places in the third district…
Constantin Luser’s resounding Bandoneon Intensive Care Unit, Claudia Märzendorfer’s softly melting Ice Records, Hans Tschiritsch’s Sound Propeller, begging to be tried out, Christoph Theiler’s chaotic water-filled Fluid Control and Georg Vogel’s highly precise keyboard instruments with 31 tones per octave, the ephemeral disposable instruments by noid a.k.a. Arnold Haberl, the interactive tactile sound space You Never Know by Elisabeth Schimana and Hillevi Munthe, tuning fork orchestra tuning forks by Lissie Rettenwander, music machines by Jakob Scheid, sound sculptures by Max Bühlmann and many more. By the way: because we only had one weekend, the classical occupations recognised by the federal guild, such as builders and makers of string instruments, organs, pianos, wood and brass instruments and harmonicas had to be left out this time.
