We use words like "experience" very sparingly, but this world premiere is a true exception: for a whole evening, the Picture Gallery of the Kunsthistorisches Museum will be transformed into a – freely explorable, of course – sound labyrinth. Instruments from six centuries will enter into dialogue with the paintings. Around 70 musicians will bring to life a giant three-dimensional, four-hour-long compendium of atmospheres and tunings, temporally and spatially intertwined. Georg Friedrich Haas spent many months perfecting the piece (with countless pitches, calculated up to 5–8 decimal points and 623 pages of score just for the pianos in the Dome Hall). Thanks to COVID, this is a supplement of enyclopaedic dimensions to last year's theme of "Stimmung" (tuning/mood/atmosphere) – which will be revolutionarily free to roam around in, and thus gives this year's theme a special colour. To be seen and heard for the first time in Vienna are the Basel reconstructions of microtonal keyboard instruments from the Renaissance, brought to the Picture Gallery by musicians from the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis FHNW.
