Cast

Nothing is impossible, no new developments in their field can faze them: their completely fearless and enthusiastic treatment of music that has received the difficulty rating "incomprehensible" has made the Arditti Quartet a globally shining beacon in its field. It was founded in London in 1974 and, since the founding of Wien Modern in 1988, has performed here every year (even on the last live evening before another lockdown in 2020, with a smile). This string quartet has been solid a rock in the unstable music-historical times of the last half century. When we asked them to think about dealing with complexity this time for A Simple Guide to Complexity, the Arditti Quartet chose three "incomprehensibly" complex pieces and uses them – to borrow a key term of the Viennese School – to show how "comprehensibility" can be brought to light.
