Since its foundation in 1988, Wien Modern has had its base at the Vienna Konzerthaus. Austria's biggest festival of contemporary music is organised by the Konzerthausgesellschaft in cooperation with the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien.
Built in 1913, the Vienna Konzerthaus was intended to provide a venuea for contemporary music. Since 1945, more than 1,600 world premières have taken place in the Konzerthaus, a sign of its strong commitment to contemporary music. As well as the three traditional concert halls - the Great Hall, the Mozart and the Schubert Hall - the Konzerthaus now has a further concert hall specifically designed to showcase contemporary developments in music. Built in 2000, the new concert venue, the Berio Hall, has flexible stages and state-of-the-art technical equipment - the optimal conditions for new and experimental music.
