First planned in 1872 (architects Hasenauer and Semper), planning permission for the former «Semperdepot» was granted the following year. The building was finished in 1877 and from 1878 to 1952 used as the depot for the production and storage of backdrops and props for the Bundestheater. Despite a decision in 1975 to demolish the extraordinary building complex, it was saved and reopened in 1996 as the «Atelierhaus der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien». Since 1998 the annual graduation exhibition of the academy and numerous other events have been held on the Atelierhaus premises.
